How to dry hemlock to keep bark on7/23
First post and I appreciate in advance your comments.
I am looking to replace siding on my 1920's cottage which is hemlock with bark-on boards.
I'm cutting the boards now. Should I install wet, wait for them to dry (if so, how long), wait to install in the winter?
You should cut in the winter. The cambium layer is still soft this time of year and nearly impossible to retain bark. In winter the cambium has hardened off and the bark stays on.
Thank you, Rich.
Unfortunately, the wood was cut last week. I should have looked for this forum in advance.
At this point, what's my best chance at success - I'm currently planning to let is dry a few months and then attempt to put it on the siding.
