Planer knife balancing6/20
We have a planer with an 18" wide head. We never run boards wider than 13", so we have put blade sets 14" across from the fence; thereby leaving 4" at one end of the head empty. Will this cause knife balance issues or premature bearing wear?
You should always keep the head filled with knives. Leaving this 4" portion open over time will result in your gib wedges being fatigued and also having this open space creates a weakened area on the unsupported side of the knife slot wing. The end result could be a deformed head body or the vibration from the unused portion could even loose knife the 14" knives in your head. You need to maintain the structural integrity of your head.
I strongly suggest putting 4" knives that are new or worn to fill the unused portion of the knife slot. All knives need to be balanced to 1/10th a gram.
