This old world dining table and chairs. Has Marquetry of eight French style acanthus leafs around the top. And a center acanthus flower in bloom in the center of the top. Around the circumference on the top edge, theirs 32 carved acanthus leafs. Each leaf took 9 hours to carve per leaf. The tapered cylinder drum base is hollow. the solid American black walnut base was 8/4. When carving the leaves around the base, I carved off approxametly 3/4" of a inch. The top has 20 coats of clear polyurethane. I wet sanded the finish. Then buffed the finish with a car buffer.

Words escape me Dennis. I am curious how many coats before wet sanding the top and did you start with a gloss or build to it?

Dennis, The level of craftsmanship exhibited in the details is simply breathtaking. You did a great job designing that piece as well. How much money do you ask for a table like this?

Thank you for your compliments. I sprayed 10 coats of polyurethane before I wet sanded the finish with 400 grit. Then the next ten coats I wet sanded in between each coat with 400 grit. After the last coat I wet sand with 1200 grit to 2000 grit, to 4000 grit. Then with a car buffer and a fine grit compound I buffed entil it looks like glass. The Table sold for 30 thousand dollars. And my brother Dan designed the table.

The tabletop is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I got on this site thinking of re-finishing my dining table. No more! I'm leaving it to the professionals. Bravo!

Would you prefer an honest evaluation or just flattery?

Your ornamentation is exquisite and really showcases your superb carving and marquetry skills. Two thumbs way up!

(But)

The overall design looks just like an industrial cable spool (sorry).

Why not invest a little more of your time studying classical furniture design and architecture.

Your exceptional hand skills are wasted spent applying ornamentation to cable spools.

No amount of craftsmanship can make up for poor design.

Thanks for your compliment Jim. I agree with you on the design. But the customer wanted this design. And paid 30 thousand just for that table. So thats what I made.
