Arched top panel bed headboard and footboard

This is a queeen size arched top Headboard and footboard made with a cherry frame and curly yellow birch panels.
There are no sideboards to hold the footboard upwright. A bench has been constructed as part of the footboard to hold it upwright.

nice looking bed. The panel 'rails' look like one piece. Did you just cut them out curved from a plain sawn board? but how does the mattress stay on the bed when its owners are using it for non-slumbering activities? A

Thanks Allen,
In this case the headboard was to be attach to a metal frame. That is the reason for the free standing footboard.
