Coffered Ceiling in Dining Room

Listing #1641 Listed on: 12/19/2008 Name: Rob

I completed this ceiling several years ago. I always loved this '4 squares with diagonals' pattern.

This coffered ceiling was in a new construction home, but the ceiling was neither level or even a relatively flat plane. So that alone was a challenge to hide...

It's not a particularly complex beam system, but the profile of the beams and the profile of the perimeter ribbon are not the same but they miter together perfectly.

Very nice work with difficult angles for miters. How did you attach the beams to ceiling? Did you build crown insets in shop or install/cut each piece on ceiling?

I shot nailers/cleats on the drywall ceiling 'inside the beam' first. Then hung my sides from those cleats. I put cleats inside my beam sides to catch the beam bottom. All the crown was cut/installed on site. As I mentioned in the initial post, the ceiling/walls had serious plumb, level, flat, and square issues. That means there is quite a bit of fudging to make the layout appear perfect. So pre-assembling parts at a shop would be less practical.

Oh, forgot one thing that might be helpful to other people looking at a project like this. I built a jig to cut the very long miters for the acute angles in the triangle sections of the coffered ceiling. The jig hold the piece at a 45 degree angle from the fence and blade of a miter saw. This makes those loooong miters possible.
