My First Dresser: Solid Mahogany

Listing #2006 Listed on: 04/06/2009 Name: Aaron

Solid Mahogany dresser. I used a tung oil/shellac combo with a water-based dye after the shellac spit coat (And who says water-based products can't go over shellac?). Finished with water-born poly and alittle rubbing compound.

I've gotten an offer for $900, but I was looking around $1200. Heck, maybe I should just keep it.

Nice piece to bring back to life - just not digging the finish, looks pretty rough and bubbly.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think you should take that $900 offer.

It's the picture quality, not the finish. I had to dim down the quality to fit the 1MB limit.

I can zoom in pretty close. No, it's the finish.

Water borne finish did not do this piece justice. Looks like a strip & refinish job. Was it?

I would strip it down and just go with the tung oil and shellac.
waterborne poly is usually a pain.

the finish looks like wood that's been left out in the rain. is it suppose to be rustic like that? It looks like the mahogany has some nice figure (can often times be very boring) so a refinish could the way to go here. I would use tung oil/poly blend. It's easy to apply, rub on, wipe off. 3 coats and you're done. (General finish arm-a-seal and then the top coats).
