Since I got so much information from all the wonderful people here, I thought I might add a picture of my completed project.

Not quite up to some of your standards, but not too shabby.

The design was approved by the BI.

All cherry (sapwood was allowed) except for the Jatoba Treads and Tigerwood inlay.

Harry, luckily I live in a small town in Canada where the BI are somewhat lax. Truth be told I was granted an occupancy permit with some very hap hazard construction stairs. I contemplated adding the lattice detail to the back of the stairs, but I was growing a bit tired of making little parts.
