Pumpkin Coach Bed

Listing #227 Listed on: 09/12/2005 Name: john russell

Company Name: Russell WoodworksThis bedroom furniture was designed and built for 'This Old House-Carlisle House' that has been playing recently on TV. I was asked to build bedroom furniture for a 6 year old girl. Although I only have boys (a girl on the way!) I was not tainted by an existing setup. My first thought was a sort of cocoon where a child could escape to. My first sketches began to look like the pumpkin coach in Cinderella. From there, I made several mockups, from scaled cardboard to full size made out of 1/2" MDF. For the posts, I was limited to Q.S. White oak as it steam bends well. As it was my first attempt at steaming, it was alot of trail and error, esp. getting the curve to maintain proper height due to low ceiling height. Having successfully made the posts, I then proceeded to make panels. Headboard is made from Tamo Ash veneer, sides and foot board are made from Quilted Anigre. Solid trim is Anigre.
Finish is Danish Oil with a wipe on poly.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my project.
John
