Simple Table

A refrain from door building, I built this for my wife as a simple desk for a laptop.

Materials are jatoba with wenge inlays. Finished the TOP with 6 coats of spray non-wax shellac with two coats satin poly. Remainder of desk is two coats poly only.

Should have been native American hardwoods instead of imports.

An import to you may be a native species to someone else. I'm assuming you live in America? People all over the globe use this website.

An American hardwood, why? Strength, color, beauty, expense? Please be specific...explain.

Beautiful table, don't mind him - people make stupid comments from time to time.

I agree w/Bob.

As is most often the case, the more clean and simple the piece, the prettier it is.

Your table has it all: balance, color, proportion, and finish. It could be made of #3+ framing lumber and it would still look great.

I would disagree with the comment about the design - the stretcher is a shin killer. There is no reason for it to be located where it will interfere with where one's legs would have to go.

Disregard that previous comment - I misread the photos.

Yes, the pictures could be better....the "stretcher" is to the rear and is intended primarily to be a foot rest and secondarily a "stretcher". Also, a better picture would reveal the "ends" of the stretcher whereby I inlaid the wenge on the legs.

Thanks everyone for comments, they are appreciated - positive and negative. I believe woodworkinng is a never-ending journey of learning and that knowledge should be shared.

What I learned of jatoba is fresh milling = good gluing. And of wenge, sanding is almost an art due to its high contrast of "hard and soft" nature. Sanding can produce palpable waves in the grain.
