In our area nobody is doing Oak, is this common in Virginia? It seems like the tile and granite are competing with each other.

No it is not that common. I feel the same way about the granite and tile but the homeowner made the choice and is happy with it.

The tile is a bit "busy" for my taste but the change is great. I never saw any reason to have wood and not show it off.
