Nice work. How many lights you break a month?

Posted By:Russ K

Nice job on the door. I need to build a similar style door in a couple of weeks. 7' tall, 8' wide, square top, arched top rails, and side lights. Wood will be rustic grade alder. Are your panels tongue and groove planks or are they solid with grooves? What construction method did you use on the rail and stile? What type of glue did you use? Where did you purchase the weather stripping and thresh hold? This will be my first time building and entry door so any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

ha ha never broke a light yet but we are starting a pair of 4 x 11 foot front doors next week so i had better be careful. the transome will be a pair of 4x 7 to match. total opening 8' by 19'.

the weather stripping is off the shelf kerf in weather stripping from any big box retailer. it goes around all 4 sides of the door. i like to use it because it's easy for the homeowner to replace at a later date. and that's usually right after the door gets varnished. this is the first time i used a metal threshold in a long time and would not do it again unless i get another customer who insist he knows best. i usually built a 1 and 1/2' threshold to match the door. russ k good luck on your door and post some pictrues for us.

If I dont have a mortising machine is there an alternative way of making the mortise joint?

Posted By:andy perry

hi, sure, you just use your plunge router. make a table. use 3/8" plywood, say 16 by 20 and screw a fence onto the bottom. on top you can put strips on wood so your router will only cut in one direction. when you clamp the router to the rail or stile you will plunge as you move the router back and forth thereby cutting a mortise. if you want to you can cut the traditional tenon on the rails or stand them on end and plunge into the grain and make the mortise. hope this helps. andy
