Walnut/Maple Chess Table

Listing #380 Listed on: 07/14/2006 Name: Dan Gross, Jr.

Company Name: Mayberry CabinetryThis is a chess table that I just finished making for our home. Top is solid maple and walnut with 2.25" squares. Frame is solid walnut. One of my friends saw it and now wants me to make one for them. Just wondering what you guys would charge for something like this? Took about 20 hours from start to finish. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

nice table, dan.

google "walnut chess table" and you'll get an idea what similar tables cost. there are plenty of "chess shops" out there as well as tens of thousands of serious chessplayers. some of us take our equipment very seriously. while i have a very good plastic tournament set, i've been looking for years for "just that right" set of wooden pieces. haven't found them yet, but close contenders have always been in the $150.+ range. seems like a nicely crafted table goes for up to $700.

one comment on your table...as a design element, a contrasting drawer pull is a nice idea but i think it might become a distraction during a game.

Great job Dan

Leo you should be sitting on the side without the drawer when you play, and of all the excuses I have heard I have never once had someone say to me that the would have beat me if not for the darn drawer pull. =)

Again Dan great job

Technically a chess board is 8x8 symetrical so you could be playing on the perpendicular sides and it wouldn't matter with the draw pull.

Dan,

Very nice table, I think the drawer pull is the best feature on the table. From the picture the pull looks like it has great figure. As far as price I would charge $1200-$1500 if the next one is going to take 20 hours. The second one you make sould go faster. I would not sell a custom piece for $30 per labor hour. Great Job

The drawer pull is curly maple, so you are correct, there is quite a bit of figure in it.
Yeah, the grain on the top does all go the same direction. This was necessary to keep the top dimensional stable so the walnut borders don't come apart during expansion/contraction.
Thank you all for your feedback, I appreciate it! I, too, think I can cut the 20 hour time down to around 16 or so hours on the next one.
