Black Walnut Box

Listing #398 Listed on: 08/09/2006 Name: Blake Imeson

Company Name: Imeson WoodworkingThis is a project I did for a friend but maybe will build more to sell. How much would this sell for? I was thinking $600?

I am 18 yrs old and starting to do more custom ww projects for people as my name gets out.

It is made out of curly black walnut and tigerwood for the pull and full splines. It has an interior tray lined with felt.

It is finished with multiple coats of pre-cat laquer 36 sheen and ended with paste wax.

It took about 30 hrs to complete incl. designing but I built an identical one out of pine at the same time to set up machinery and get an idea what kind of difficulties I might have.

Appreciate any comments/criticisms!

It is nice to see young blood getting into this trade. You seem to be on your way to a decent start. I do, however, think you are a bit optomistic at a $600 price tag. If you do get that, I would build those all day long and sell them. Good luck with your future.

Nice lookin box, but maybe $300 is a more appropriate price. When I look at hours I have spent on a project I compare them to the hours a master would put into it - then I create a price (accounting for materials, etc).

I do love the spline joints.

So how many hours would a master put into this box?

Blake, you have done the easy part- building the prototype. Now you need to find a market and speed up your process as orders come in. I think your price is good for a prototype. It is what a design firm would pay, then they would mass produce this item in China for about $80 each in batches of 500. Retail mark-up would probably be about 300%. Keep up the good work. Research design firms for more work like this or start marketing it on your own. Get it into some good stores. I'd take some marketing courses at school if I were 18 again! Like I've said, the woodworking is the easy part. Long ago my Grandfather said I could make more money sitting at my desk than working harder in the shop. I believe him now.

Nice looking box, I agree that $600 is pretty high. Maybe it would be more efficient to make 5-10 at a time, that would surely speed up production time. Nice work though for sure. I have seen some very elaborate boxes made from Koa and other exotic woods that sell for $100-300 on Ebay. Here is a link for a reference

I think it looks great. You have to remember that you set the price. Whatever you think that your time is worth. What we do is a special skill. People will see the difference from your hand work and the mass production from china. I think 600$ is a good price for you to sell them at. If you go to a gallery and have them sell them then you will have to take a cut, because they mark up and they won't want to sell it for more than 600$. SO you might get 400 for it from them.
