My granddaughter started collecting the state quarters in 1999 and she had one of the little blue cardboard items to place her quarters. Mind you, she was just 11 years old then. As 11 year olds will do, she kept playing with it and pretty soon started pushing the quarters through the thin cardboard. Each time she would do so she would bring it down to me (as they lived only a block away) and I would hear "Grandpa, fix it, fix it please". By the time 2002 came around there was more duct tape on it than anything else but she had kept up collecting those quarters.
I started thinking how I could make her something that she couldn't tear up. I happened on a plan from Rockler for the map. Instead of buying the plans and the Forstner bit, I acquired an atlas type map downloaded of just the state outlines. (I did buy the Forstner bit though.) I made her the very first quarter map (which she displays proudly in her apartment). Friends saw her’s, some of our friends saw the one I made for our house, those friends shared it with other folks, and so on and so on. Over the years I have probably made close to 400 of the maps and they are still selling. My granddaughter still tells folks that she has serial number 1.
The maps are great for replacing the blue cardboard holders that seem to stay in a drawer and are forgotten. The maps are 32” x 24” and are designed to hang on a wall and hold your collection. They include all states and the territories and are made from 3/4" material. They give a nice 3D look and frame colors to match any decor.
