Since I have posted a number of my marquetry furniture pieces here I thought I should also post a cabinetry job I did a couple years ago. This library wall was built for a client that had recently purchased a 6th floor condo in a new building here in San Diego and needed lots of misc. storage.

This photo shows one of the particular storage requests. Twin china pullouts that are on 3' full extension slides able to hold about 500 lbs each. These pullouts disappear under the stairway overhead. The first angled drawer is a pull out shoe rack and the double doors visible in the previous photo cover a glass display area. All of the drawers on this end of the cabinet are on 3' deep full extension slides to maximize the useable storage space. The most difficult aspect of this project was bringing all of the parts up to the 6th floor in a rather small elevator. Some of the larger cabinets were assembled on site. Installation took just over a week. Somehow I built this cabinet in a shop that was only 400 sqft; I didn't see the unit fully assembled until it was being installed and I think I got very lucky. Any comments are welcome. Thanks Craig Thibodeau

The condo has two large columns in the living room placed so that we were not able to get images of the entire piece in a single photo. The drawers are setup for various uses. Some are file drawers, some are just for misc storage and others are very specifically layed out. There are three separate lighting zones controlled with three dimmable touch pads located in various places hidden in the cabinetry. The two large open wall areas (only one of which is visible in these photos) were intended to break up the large expanse of cabinetwork and give the client a place for hanging artwork.

The cabinet is approximately 33' long by 9 1/2' high and varies in depth from 15" to just under 4' under the stairs. It is constructed primarily of Cherry veneer and solids with Pommele Sapele veneer for the door and drawer fronts. The base and crown trim is satin black lacquer over Cherry. The entire piece is finished with medium rub conversion varnish, full fill on the doors and drawers.

Nice work! I like the way the cabinets are framed gives it a modern tansu look. The black pulls, crown and toe face provide just enough contrast against the more complementary colors of Cherry and Pommele Sapele. Did you laminate the Pommele Sapele or have it custom made? How many hours did it take to design/build?
Great work!

Thanks for the compliments. Lou, I had the Sapele panels layed up at a local shop that also builds custom furniture. I don't really enjoy the work required to veneer a 4x8 sheet of mdf by myself and he has all the equipment to process panels quickly. I don't recall how long it took to build but it was several months, it took longer because of my small shop at the time and having to shuffle cabinets in and out of the shop to a storage unit to have space to work.
