Can You Bleach White Oak?

Short answer: Yes. June 28, 2013

Question
I have a project to quote that calls for bleached quatersawn white oak solids and veneers. I thought white oak was tricky to bleach. Any help would be appreciated. Is it costly to bleach, if even possible?

White oak bleaches okay. Just use a two part wood bleach. Kleen Strip makes the one that I use.

From the original questioner:
Thanks. I did some research and learned there are 3 methods. Pigment version, pickled, and bleach. I just saw that bleaching white oak is not recommended due to the high amounts of tannins. If I get the project and sample, I will play with the bleach method first. Seems like it would be the easiest. Let's hope!

Just bleached some white oak with the 2 part system and it worked nice without issues.
