Slide Positioning for Spice-Rack Pullouts

It's basically a drawer stood on its side, but you have to think about where to locate the slides. March 9, 2008

Question
I’m currently building a job with a hood cabinet with spice pullouts on either side of the cooktop that go to the countertop. Since the rest of the kitchen uses Blum Tandem drawer slides with Blumotion (soft close), is there any way to use this type of runner for a tall and narrow pullout (interior cab size approximately 6w x 37.5h x 17d)? Normally I would build the pullout like a drawer turned on its side with a solid 1/2” back (side) with adjustable shelves that I would mount 2-3 full extension Fulterer drawer slides to. All slides are mounted on one side with the other side open for the shelves. This still seems like the best option, but I would like the slides hidden if possible, like mounted above and below the pullout, and have the soft close feature. That would give me more width, though less in height. Also, I don’t want to spend a fortune for the specialized slides that cost $100 or more for the big pullouts. Perhaps some of you out there have dealt with something like this before?

I'm not sure how you would use the blumotion, but you could use the side mount slides and mount them on the top and bottom of the pullout instead of the sides - this way they would be hidden.

I built a few of the pullouts like you describe with the regular BB slides on the top and bottom of the pullout and it worked fine until it was loaded with stuff. The weight caused the slides to bind up. To fix it I put 2 slides on the back to carry the weight and one on top to prevent sideways wobble.

The side and top/bottom solution is the one that gives the sturdiest mounting. We use one on the bottom and one on the back side of the pullout.
