Wood Movement and Strap Hinges

Quick tips on mounting large hinges to solid wood in a way that won't restrict the freedom of the wood to expand or contract in response to ambient conditions. July 11, 2013

Question
We have a commission for a blanket chest; the top lid will be 18" wide solid curly maple. They want strap hinges to span 14" across the width on the inside of the top lid. I’m concerned about wood movement securing these with screws to the solid wood - any thoughts?

Slot the holes in the hinge and use some decorative washers.

Another method is to insert a dovetailed cross piece that can let the lid expand and contract while little movement is seen in the hinges - similar to mounting the hinges to a breadboard end.
