Q.
I am a beginner luthier in Romania and would like to learn more on wood characteristics (grain, density, texture, etc.). Unfortunately I can't afford buying books or other informative material from US (a Romanian's average salary is about $120 per month). Could you point to me some ways I can find this info (I think Internet resources would be best).

A.
I assume that you have access to the University. If so, there are several people there with wood technology backgrounds who might also have some textbooks. Otherwise, some wood sites include

http://www.southernpine.com
http://www.woodwideweb.com

Professor Gene Wengert is Extension Specialist in Wood Processing at the Department of Forestry, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
