'97 Holzher 1402SF edgebander $3000 deal or walk away?

Hey guys,

I have the chance to pick up a Holzher 1402 SF 1997. I have the guy at $3000.

The problem is... the machine is in the WORST building I have ever seen. We are talking water on the ground everywhere because the roof is leaking all over the place. The edge bander is sitting by the wall with no dripping water getting on it, but the bottom foot tubes are in a slight amount of puddle. There is surface rust on the every part that was bare steel and some surface rust in small patches on areas that were painted. Inside the router housing, the sound insulation foam is literally just flaking off. The vacuum hose completely rotted away to the steel ring coils. But all that being said, the paint on the machine itself is perfect. Besides dust being on it, it looks like it was a very clean machine when it was pulled. Been sitting supposedly for 2 years. I have no way to hook up to electric and test it. It's the electrical switches that worry me. So it's a huge gamble. Should I just stay away from the thing? I found machines of same model and year that were in conditioned shops going for 5-8k.

Offer him three k,, on condition you pick it up , hook it up it runs, if so you pay him, if not you give it back.

it is worth that to you ?

Go with Jim's recommendation and I would also call Lee Johnson at Lakeside Industrial Supply in South Carolina. He is an expert Holzher tech and knows every part of that machine and its value. look him up online.
great person to deal with.

Hey guys,

I really appreciate the advice. And Brian thank you for the networking connection. I ended up walking away from it entirely. The whole deal with this was that the guy needed to be out of the building that day and he was trying not to leave behind machinery the new tenant who bought the place could sell. They had a falling out I guess. It was pretty much a take it for the price and deal with it because there was no bringing it back if it didn't run.

Really, I think for my shop I need a smaller unit, that still does a good job. ideally, something that can be sweet talked into working when she's being fussy. Not a total ball breaker every time there is something that needs adjustment as some of these machines can be. I'm undecided about hot air vs glue pot.

Do you guys have any recommendations of where to start looking as far as models?

I have two banders both Brandts, a kd 53 and 54, one is a 440 v motor and not sure why it was switched, i have a new bigger bander coming and will attempt to sell the 440 v one probably cant because of most small shops will not have 440 v so i will just dismantle it for parts

I only have experience with Holzher. I had a holzher 1402 that I bought used from a dealer in MA. Had it for 10+ years and worked well. Although I have to say that it was fussy swithching between different thickness materials. Also using Dorus glue cartridges helps alot with glue seepage over the top and bottom edges. Got into more restaurant work over past couple of years and using PVC so I recently switched it out for a 2002 holzher 1416 with corner rounding. Its a great machine so far. whichever machine you end up getting, I would recommend having a tech help with install and training. its worth the money. what type of banding would you be applying?

1mm to 1.5mm veneer tape. Raw in whatever species I need and prefinished maple. In some instances I will need to veneer hardwood, but most of the smaller machines cap out at 3mm and if wear becomes an issue, then I would just do it the slow way that I have been and clamping the panel to a table with the 1/8" edge strip.

So really, I'm just planning to run standard 1mm/1.5mm veneer rolls. I don't do any pvc banding. Not that I wouldn't, I just haven't had commercial jobs that need it.

Really looking to just speed up production on european box cabinets because iron on sucks, edge clamping (because I don't have a proper edge press) also sucks, taping them on with strapping tape is garbage also. The only feasible answer I can see is that I need to make the move and pony of the cash for an edgebander.

I guess I should also say, spacing being an issue... I have been trying to search and read up on the smaller machines. Ideally something under 9 feet. I've seen some compact units that look adequate. I know these aren't built to the industrial spec that the big ones are, but I would only be running it lightly. Most of my work has been face frame construction, but for people looking for cheaper cabinets I would like to be able to offer a cost effective (for me) method of building european box.

If I start getting more work doing european cabinets then I would look more seriously at a bigger unit. For now I think I can get by for some years running a compact unit and as my business grows eventually outgrow and replace it.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
