Small edgebander

Im interested in adding a gluepot edgebander to my shop and looking for recomendations. We are low volume, our average job turns about every 6 weeks. No I dont want to outsource. No I dont have a large budget. Yes our shop is small. I definitely want handheld?portable. There seems to be a lot of imported banders, but not many made here in the states. Dont know if that matters? what would be the best bang for my buck these days

We purchased a Hebrock Top 1000. Small footprint, fit our budget but a pretty good bander for size. Have had for about 2 years.

We have a Grizzly G0774 and are overall very happy with it. Its not perfect, but if you take the time to keep it clean and adjusted its quite good.

Cantek makes some similar sized/priced machines that I've heard good things about. Some of the smaller options from Felder are also in the same price range.

The biggest downside is it won't edge anything under 4" wide or 8" long.

When its running its great, once an adjustment is off it drives me absolutely insane.

I would like a machine with premill, but don't consider it to be a must have.

Look into cantek. If you finance it you can get our payments under $300 a month. It is amazing how quick you can make that up. It also opens you up to the world of frameless cabinets. There is a lot more money to be made there just because of labor saving and how much quicker you can turn jobs.

Virutex makes a $4k gluepot bander. We can push 40 European boxes a week through with it. Best value by far on the market.

I've only used the very small banders a few times but like the bigger machines... Keep it clean, only allow one person to use &/or make adjustments. Turn the pot down or off when not in use. By keeping the glue at the same level as much as possible there will be less baked on goo the clean. A bander is the most labor saving thing in the shop.

No idea what you're budget is, but we just priced out a new lower end Homag. $50k. It has premill and scrapers. The next step down was around $30k and would possibly work fine for us.

Edge banders are crazy expensive, but make you much more productive. In our case, allows us to take on some work we currently aren't readily capable of.

I'm also looking for some smaller edgebander. Does anybody have any experience with Maggi System 3/50 Edgebander? It looks like it's a newer product (maybe first edgebander from Maggi) and it's hard to find any reviews yet.

Jonathan,

What type of edgings are you applying? PVC, veneer, 3mm, wood, HPL, etc...?

Are you looking for used or new? I don't sell used edgebanders, but I do occasionally have a customer that upgrades to a machine with more capabilities that has a reliable machine they would like to sell.

You can find some extremely light weight new edgebanders out there around $12K. Depending on the type of work you do and the quality standards you expect that may suit you but don't expect a $50K finish from a $12K machine.

mostly prefinished and unfinished wood veneer and 1mm wood printed pvc. Ive never had to do 3mm yet though im not opposed. My volume is super low. Approximately one large kitchen every 6-8 weeks as an estimate. Also any recomendations for machine brokers in southern california would be awesome

Used or new, though everyone seems to be warning me against used

I bought a holzher 1402 about 4 years ago. Its worked relatively well, replaced a few bearings and other tlc myself. Im quite handy myself with mechanical issues, but pneumatic and electrical is stretching my capabilities. I had some issues with the end trimmer timing that i worked on, eventually the problem went away gradually. Go figure. As a 1 man shop with similar volume, i'd find it hard to be without it. Unless you have a good tech close by i'd aim for something newer.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
