Mirka Ceros repair?

2/20/21

Well my ~7 year old Ceros just started shutting down and will not run more than a couple seconds with pressure and the green light shuts off on the sander. Anyone know if they are still repairing these? I am guessing they will tell me to buy the DEROS. I really liked the small footprint.

Once it shuts off can you restart it or do you have to shut off the power pack? Sounds like a bad connection in the wire or a broken wire just at the junction of where it goes into the sander
Let me know and we will figure it out

Call and ask Mirka, that'll be much better information.

Dave..thank you so much for your help!!
I first noticed the problem the sander would bog down in very short bursts randomly while sanding but it kept going. Then about 5 minutes later it began stopping and the green light shut off on the sander. Also a few times the green light shut off on the main power box. I can still get the sander to start up but it quickly shuts down. While it is running i was wiggling the power cable at the sander and that did not shut it down so i am guessing that its not just a shorted cable connection but i hope i am wrong. I did not smell any kind of burning electrical odor. This has been such an awesome sander and i always look to repair a good tool before replacement. Again thank you so much.

I've replaced a couple of cables. There isn't much inside. A board with the switch and speed controls. The motor.

The hardest part is getting the rubber cover off. Then you just have to have a decent soldering iron.

That sounds like a broken wire. I should do a YouTube how to take them apart. Not hard and at least you can check the wire integrity.

I don't know Dave, the guy asked if Mirka is repairing them. Just trying to help him answer his question.

Is there a way to diagnose it myself?
Wiggling the wires while its running does not shut it off. Its when i put pressure on it.
Have not had time to call Mirka yet.

They're pretty simple. Take it apart and see what you can see?

I wish they'd make the deros the same profile as the ceros, but mount the inverter in the plug. I'll be sad when my last ceros dies.

I've sent my Ceros in twice and they repaired it for free, their service was great! The second time there were literally flames coming out the side of it. I bought a Deros when it was getting repaired the second time (maybe 3+ years ago) and have been using it ever since (still have the Ceros as a back up). The Ceros is a little smaller but the difference is minimal. I've tried a Dynabrade and all the Festools. Nothing comes close to the Mirka sanders.

I called Mirka yesterday and good news!! The sander is not under the recall and they will repair it after i approve the price. I would feel better having them do it. Just checked my receipt and its right at 7 years old.

We have two Ceros' that have been working hard and never had a problem (fingers crossed but likely just jinxed myself). I dont know if Im just stubborn or what but I am still refusing to move to the Deros envelope and we just pulled in two 6" Airvantage sanders. There are issues that are not quite the quality of the Ceros sanders (transformer is a bit smaller physically but what does that have to do with anything, cord and plug to transformer not as nice as the Ceros, speed control perhaps not as smooth down to the low end though we never use it) but at $319 its not the same cost as the Ceros either. I think we paid well in excess of 400 each for the Ceros.

I wish Mirka would re-offer the Ceros instead of walking away from that envelope but Im sure they have their reasons. Same with Surfprep. We will probably order a couple 5" Airvantage sanders here shortly.

I agree with you. If I could find used ceros I would buy 2 more.
The advantage, does it act like the ceros like from slow to high speed as you push on the trigger?

Yes, it has the same paddle control. It has one function we will have to get use that it has a "safety" mode. When the sander is turned on its in safety mode which is if the paddle is inadvertently depressed (sander is flipped over by accident or something lands on the paddle) it will kick on, then off. You hit either of the speed control buttons on the back of the sander to kick it out of safety. I will admit I was personally lazy about this but guys in the shop always shut the ceros off on the tool when done because of it getting bumped or flopped on its back and it will run off wildly. I have to remind myself to kick the airvantage out of safety when I pick it up. It also return back to that safety mode after 5 minutes of no use.

The other thing is there is no way to kick it out of paddle control and just to full on/off which again doesnt bother me.

Last, the airvantage has 3 max speed settings. 7K, 9K, and 10K. So the paddle is variable through those ranges (I rarely ever throttle the Mirka) but the extreme low end on the paddle with the Airvantage does seem to be a bit higher than the Mirka before it cuts to zero.

We are rarely ever trying to feather the sander down in the 1k-2k ranges so I dont know that that would ever be a real issue but its there none the less. My notion is I will deal with some functionality to have that envelope especially as 99% of the time Im running wide open or perhaps very slight feathering on some parts.

They are super smooth. One finger holding a 6" Airvantage with 150 grit 5 hole on it is perfectly fine by me.

Additionally, The AirVantage has a super wide funnel type DC connection to the sander which seems to be making a massive difference in pickup.

Hi Guys
Good news!! The sander just needs a speed controller and they are able to repair it for around $150. SO HAPPY!!

I received the sander back from repair. It works now but the power cable is about 5' shorter than when i sent it in. No one knows why and the service guy is on vacation. They did not say anything about shortening my power cable. No one knows if they correct length power cable is available from Mirka since the Ceros is discontinued. They say send it back so i will but does anyone here know if its just a normal power cable that can be spliced to make longer. I am super bummed about this because now because i have 5' less useable area to reach. The power cable was in perfect condition when i sent it in with zero damage or anything. The best i can think of is they repair guy damaged my cable 5' in and just said screw it.

If I recall that cord has 4 wires in it so you can use a rubber coated cable that has black white red and green. You will have to do some soldering and you really have to make sure that you keep the order of the cable junction correct or it won't work. It's not a random connection. Easier to add to the hub end that goes into the transformer box. 2 wires go to North and south on the motor and 2 go east and west.

Thanks Dave. I was thinking maybe it was a special wire so good to know i could just go buy wire at the electric supply. They said to send it back to them but could not tell me if they could either get a new cable or splice in a length. So i am waiting for their repair guy to get back from vacation because apparantly he is the only one who knows. I would rather have them fix their mistake than to have to deal with it myself. I will say that their service besides this cord issue has been excellent and the sander runs like a champ again. They said they are trying their hardest to keep all the Ceros up and running because customers dont like the Deros.

Was giving the sander a workout today before i send it back in. I am 99.99 % sure that the sanders rotation is backwards from when i sent it in. While holding the sander in working position and looking down upon it, the pad now rotates counter clockwise. Can someone please check their sanders rotation? Dont think i have ever had a sander that rotates CC and none of my other sanders rotate counter clockwise.

If I hold my Ceros with the sand paper facing me it turns counter clockwise.

Looking down on it in working position it should rotate clockwise.

Received the sander back from repair with proper length cord and rotation. Runs like a champ again. Let me just say aside from the repair eventually being properly done, this was the absolute best top notch customer that i have ever received!!!

I own 4 of them love how they work. Problem after about 30 hours of sanding they all just STOP working and because I'm in a rush I just buy a new one.
WELL finally got a break and dropped them off at the place I bought them at. They sent (3) in 4 months ago all with same exact problem. No estimate they want $720 for me to get them back. No mark up on stores end. So $250 to fix them no warning. They can pound I'll never buy another one.
