Straining gallon plus size

As the new owner of a CAT Cougar H2O I'm facing a learning curve. One of the first issues is straining 1 gallon and 5 liter can quantity's of paint instead of gun cups. Is there really nothing better than a bag filter?
Some one must have come up with a method that is neat and efficient like cone filters and a stand. Waterborne if it matters.

If your WB finish is heavy bodied the best thing Ive found is to order medium mesh or coarse cone filters. They can be hard to find. Most bag filters we have are extremely coarse and we only use them for latex through airless but I have used two of them (one inside the other) when we were spraying some really heavy body waterborne. We just have a shop made cone filter holder we set a gallon can under but still if the material is heavy and you only have medium filters its on the slow side and can even take two filters at times.

I was a potter for a period many years back and If your straining pails you may look into a glaze sieve. I have 2-3 of them in the shop from those days and thats what I use to strain heavy material in five gallon pails. The sit right in the top of a 5 gallon bucket. They arent perfect not being cone/funnel shape but they work really well when needed.

Also,.. glanced in the cabinet after post and forgot that as much as it makes me throw up in my mouth I had found some 70-80 mesh cone filters at horror freight that, while being coarse, also have a lot more screen surface area than most automotive cone filters. The medium mesh cone filters I normally use are PPG and 226 microns. 70-80 mesh translates to 177-210 microns for reference.

Thank You for the reply Mark, the sieves look like a possible answer in conjunction with a funnel/stand. How is cleaning them?
Anyone else have tips?
