I am from Hutchinson, Kansas and I am a hobbiest/logger woodworker. I am involved with scouts ect. i plan to make a small portable cabin for events, to move on a trailer but prefer to be able to dump it off and pick it back up to return home. lots of cottonwood and elm, some locust and oak. Tons of eastern red cedar for the cabin. cabin to be about 8 x 12 feet, on skids. need strength, durability and some rot resistance. could be up on blocks at home. have used cottonwood as trailer floors with some linseed oil and hold up fine, also need some abrasion resistance to drag some on skids. ? coatings, metal abrasion guards?Any ideas on skid design, wood type ect.?

No reply so far so I thought I would add a few thoughts. While in Duluth, we toured a logging museum. The log sleds were simple but each joint had a purpose based on the forces of pulling the sled. I have seen a few log cabin questions on this forum so thought I would give it a shot. Not enough time to build it now anyway but if any of you have tips on design or wood selection that would be fine. if not, some day I will post pics of what I am doing. Then I am sure I can get lots of opinions. LOL. thanks

Doc,
I thought someone would've responded prior now also....sorry I should have sooner. I think it's a great thing working with the scouts and the idea you have.....I was a tent camping scout BUT to each his own. Cabin....I would use the ERC for the lumber as it is natural resistant and lighter than your most choices except the cottonwood....the skids...I personally would sit it up like a tiny house on a trailer frame as from my experience UNLESS you have a dedicated special made trailer for loading and unloading a 8' wide unit...it doesn't fit between the wheels to slid on and off.
One unique feature you can do is folding front and back porches for more space. This unit would be neat for portable kitchen/mess hall.
Keep us informed on progress. I have a similar 8' x 16' permenant skid cabin at farm with a 4'x16' covered porch totalling 12'x 16'...a little heavy to skid easily. Mine is made of white oak skids with WO floor joists with T&G plywood floor. the wall studs are rough cut 2"x4" tulip poplar with 1"x8" poplar lap siding. This cabin interior is designed for rough camping (in the dry BUT that's all), I have 2 upper bunks (7'x4') at each end high enough I to have a folding couch/bunk under one end and a table-2 bench/bunk at the other totaling 4 usable bunks IF needed. 2 small windows and a half glass wood door....the kicker is it sits at 1,000 ft elv with a view east of 40 miles on a clear day/night....I call it my "dog house with a few"!!!! That keeps me out of it (doghouse) most of the time as she KNOWS I'd stay there!!! LOL!!! One pic...foggy morning view from porch.

Thanks TT. Yes My son just got his eagle. I am the troop camping coordinator. Also Troop doc. I am almost 60 and we do a trappers in Jan., and camp Alaska in Feb. I usually have a town called "Ketchican" and do logging demo and education about trees and wood in general. Thought it wood be nice to have a tiny wood stove and be able to stand up in the early am. I worked for a guy building houses in high school. (40th reunion coming up). I appreciate your advice. I have a 5 x 10 trailer with 3500 pound axle and brakes. Thought the skids could go on the outside and slide on and off resting on the floor joists. will have to get material estimate and check weight. I have a big pin oak log, and think I have read it can be rot resistant like white oak. I have reviewed some of the old wooden logging sleds for design/structure ideas. The idea is it could function as a headquarters/first aid station but not look like a camper. I have seen a few cabins on this forum, but sorry if this is not the right place. thanks again!

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
