Hello All,
I hope this would help people. I have veneered for many years and this last adventure was very puzzling, wrinkles after a cold vacuum press glue up. The veneer was very figured eucalyptus. I have done tons of maple, sapele, all types of burl and never really got any wrinkles (not this bad at least).
I have tried different types of glues, glue applicators, heating up the garage, less glue, more glue. I even changed my trusty old vacuum pump. Nothing worked.
The problem, it turns out is that this veneer loves to absorbing water. The thing that finally worked was this. I had to put another caul on top of my piece that is about the same size into my bag and pressed for 1.5 hours.
Normally I have a the bag, the channeled platen, plexiglass on top the platten to help with glue cleanup, then the board with the veneer faced down on the plexi. Worked all these years.
Now I have the bag, the channeled platen inside, the plexiglass (not needed) on the platen, the board with the veneer (veneer facing up) and another board (melanin) on top. This has worked for many many glue ups with this particular veneer.
Hope that helps anyone. I was going crazy that my system was working all these years.
The veneer is nice but damn.
