Single phase industrial unit

I'm looking for a new dust collector for my professional shop. We currently have two separate 3hp units connected to different equipment and I want a single unit that can handle 1 to 3 tools at a time. The largest tools for dust collection are a 53" Timesaver and a 24" planer. The big issue we have is that we need the unit to be single phase and it must be located inside the shop per city code. Any suggestions on a unit to look at that is reasonably priced would be appreciated.

Are you running your 53" time-saver on single phase? If not then why the single phase requirement? How much chip type dust do you produce? Or mostly finer dust? Biggest motor for a collector I've seen in single phase is 10 hp, but personally I would get a phase converter for a better industrial collector. I have 2 indoor units and one big outdoor but I produce lots of chips and fluffy dust from making moldings so my indoor units are a pain, bags and barrels fill to quickly. You don't have a choice if the unit has to stay inside but a bigger collector should have a larger storage capacity. My biggest indoor unit is 10HP and has 3 55 gallon drums. How much space can you dedicate to a collector? How far is it going to be from your breaker panel? A long run in single phase for a big motor is going to be expensive for wire. Do you need this to be a single stage or 2 stage unit? How tall are your ceilings? When you get most of these answered, you will start eliminating different collectors due to restrictions on that data.

Hi Dustin. Here is some additional details.
My Timesaver is on a 60hp phase convertor. I only run the Timesaver for maybe an hour per day and it is a little bit of a pain to turn the phase convertor on as it is in another room. I would prefer to not run a 60 hp phase convertor for 8+ hours per day for the dust collector since the collector runs most of the day, thus the need for single phase. I could add a separate phase convertor, but due to electrical codes and location of everything, it will cost more for the electrical than the collector to do this.

I produce 70/30 chips to fine dust. I would love a larger collector (my two now each have a 55 gal drum), but I'm thinking 2-4 drums is probably all I'll end up with. A local farmer picks up all my sawdust and I just dump it into bins for him, so it works well enough.

I have 10 foot ceiling in the shop everywhere and 13 foot in between rafters with plenty of floor space if needed. I have a conduit and wiring in the area already so pulling new wires shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for the help.

Look up extrema machine, under the typhoon brand they have a cyclone unit that is 7.5 hp single phase. It might fit your space, maybe. It would be tight as its pretty tall. I would go with a cyclone unit as the barrels are way easier to deal with than bags. I had this unit in 3 phase years ago and I wish I hadn't sold it. Worked really nice and had 2 drums under it. Price isn't to bad for something that can pull everything in a smaller shop up to 2-3 machines at once. It is an industrial unit, not an upgraded hobby machine. May be worth looking into.

I am a big fan of units like the Dantherm.

You can get a 7.5 hp single phase. They are quiet with the correct amount of filter area. You can also get a hopper that goes under them and dumps with a forklift.

Belfab also has nice units. They have hoppers the pull easily and can be dumped with a fork lift. You can also get more filter modules so more filter and waste capacity.

We have had a small (15hp) cyclone on a wide belt and it works, the one we had was noisy.

I question how you run a widebelt on a 3hp collector?

Good luck!

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
