Curly Pear wood / Quilted Maple wall cabinet

As my first project at college of the redwoods I'm making a smaller wall cabinet out of some very nice pear wood and quilted maple. I'm going back to the kitchen cabinets and countertops when I am done with the school and plan on taking on higher end furniture grade cabinetry. I'm in Humboldt county and would like to try and break into the Bay area markets. There is one shop in town who does this exclusively and does very well. Is it difficult to cater to a market that isn't imediately local? Is all of the work taken from designers and / or architects?

Beautifully crafted! Nice mix of figure and wood tone. What type of finish are you planning on using? How's Krenov doing, is he still around the school?

Krenov is still in Ft. bragg, but he doesn't come to the school ever. I'm going to go visit him at his home soon which I am very much looking forward to. I don't like the oil on the pear wood, so I'm going to stick with shellac and wax which brings the figure out nicely and feels nice. The pear was a treasure to find for this project. I was just able to get all of the parts out of an otherwise "difficult plank" which had a few good knotts and checks. I was able to work all around that. Jim Budlong had the quilted maple and after seeing the combo of the two woods in a jewelry box done by a former student, I was stoked and confident in the combination of the two. I'm looking forward to finishing. THe exhibition is Next Week.

Impressive work Joel
I like the choice of woods, the colors and the grain work well together, the curved front and “legs” echo the grain of the quilted maple.
Please post some photos when you apply the finish and the hardware (In my opinion black hardware
What is the name of the store you referred to (the one in the Bay area)!

Thank you,
Monder

I'm actually going to make the pulls out of pear. Low profile. Nothing crazy. The cabinet is actually alot "louder" then I had intended. The pear wood turned out to be highly figured giving it a much more dramatic effect. I'm relieved now that I am putting the finish on, the tones blend togehter a bit more and the figure isn't as in your face as it looks in the photo. It's a little more subtle, yet obviously there. The store I was refering to is actually a high end cabinet shop in Arcata CA called Crestmark. All of their business is down in the bay area. I'll post more pictures soon.
