Gear Study

Listing #3104 Listed on: 01/22/2011 Name: Mike Olczak

This was a sculpture project for school. I wanted to make something kinetic and to challenge myself. I was curious to see if I could make something open and close with with gearing. It takes a ridiculous amount of turns for it to complete its cycle, a little over two hundred and fifty. I learned a lot. It is all made out of plywood, some mixed hardwoods and walnut veneer.

Dennis,
are there plans for this? I'm a high school shop teacher and would love to give this a try.

There are no plans for this I kinda just took a stab at it. If you go to woodgears.com there is a program that will generate gears for you and a lot of other info that might help you out.

Mike, could not find an active website called woodgears.com. Could it be something else?

If you have ever tried cutting gears using a paper pattern you will find out how monotonous and finicky it can be. I developed a method that makes it a lot more accurate and less time consuming. Check out the link above to learn more about it.
