I have a client that buys keepsake boxes off of me, and she said she wanted something unique this time. This was the perfect opportunity to try something that I've been seeing alot of lately. The box it's self is red oak, it's 10 1/2 by 7 3/4 with mittered sides. The lid is the part I was most interested in doing. It is end grain I was very excited to try this I really like how it turned out. The lid is made of red oak, walnut, and curly maple. As much as I like how the box as a whole turned out I do feel as if the box part is missing something..... let me know what you think.

Thats a very nice box but I agree it does need something. I would suggest a decoration in the lid to give the checkerboard look a bit of relief. Or perhaps a small plain fielded 'boss' upon which a name or label could be engraved. Even without that its still a very nice box, well done.

Splined corners?

How about a wood handle on the lid?

I think it needs nothing added - the simplicity is the beauty of it. My only comment would be in matching lid to box you could make it less contrast with a darker finish on the box which would meld the two together.

I agree with the added comment...three inlay-ed squares in each corner would bring the top down to the body quite well. Otherwise, the design is good and the shape pleasing.

Beautiful job! Again, there is NOTHING wrong with the box as is! Lot's to be said for the old line of, "less is more!" But, IF is were going to add ANYTHING...I would consider some "feet" or short legs. But remember too, everybody's got an opinion, too! ;-)
