This cabinet was designed and built for an overseas client. The only direction he gave me was that he wanted an Art Deco style cabinet with several different puzzles incorporated somehow into the cabinet. He suggested Japanese puzzle boxes and sliding tile puzzles for inspiration. Made of Etimoe, Amboyna Burl and Curly Sycamore with Mable Burl and various marquetry woods in the puzzle.

There is a 25 piece sliding tile puzzle hidden underneath a sliding cover in the top part of the cabinet with a marquetry picture of two birds on a background of Dogwood flowers. Underneath one of the tiles is a small button that opens the hidden compartment next to the puzzle.

The front doors have a series of 13 hidden sliding locks in a random pattern that allow the doors to be opened when the correct locks are found. These were inspired by the small Japanese puzzle boxes.

Nearly everything is accessed by one hidden magnetic key. Most of the moving parts have magnets imbedded under the veneer to either hold things closed or allow them to open when the key is used.

As always, any comments are welcome.

My web designer did another video for me of this piece, much like the Trompe Loeil table, the YouTube link is below.

Beautiful work. I built a desk for a gentleman a number of years ago and had 7 hidden areas. He called me after about ten years and asked me to tell him how to access the hidden areas. I am afraid that this would be a similar situation. They forget how to open and just get mad and break it. Again, beautiful work.

Beautiful. I've had a similar experience to McKay's.

Thanks for the nice comments. Luckily the hidden areas on this piece aren't really very difficult to find. The hard part will be unscrambling the puzzle if you mess it up.

Wow. Very, very nice. The video you posted is very well done also. I don't know how you find the clients that have interest, and are willing to pay for such interesting pieces. Keep up the good work!

Very nice. I also got a call about how to open a hidden compartment, years later.
