Currituck Millworks
Listing #150   Listed on: 06/05

I started my sawmill business in 2004, after I had been sawing my own lumber for a few years, spending all of my money in sawing. My wife suggested I make it a business so it would pay for itself, and it has. I have upgraded my mills a couple of times. I started cutting wood as a hobby, and still enjoy it. I own a Tree service, Albemarle Tree Service, Inc. and I try to salvage all logs cut from tree jobs, Whether cutting it for the customer, or hauling logs to a production mill. I especially like to keep the specialty pieces with all of the character. The size of my operation is small to medium. I have a fully hydraulic band mill, and also a Woodmizer LT40. It is set up where the hydraulic mill cuts the cants and drags them back onto rollers to set the cant on the woodmizer, which cuts to dimension. It is pretty efficient. Most projects are for farmers or woodworkers looking for special cuts of lumber. I am looking into expanding into selling cants or railroad ties, but haven't found any good connections yet. My plans are to install a dry kiln to dry 3000 to 5000 bf of lumber at a time. I don't see the benefit of starting out any smaller, as it would limit me right from the start. I will always mill on demand, as that is how I have received a good name - by supplying people with what they need, when they need it. However, I will always accept larger contracts as well.
