Drilling Holes in Solid Surface Countertops

Quick tips for hole-saw work on a solid surface counter. December 15, 2005

Question
I've been asked to drill a hole in a solid surface top. The material is Avonite and the hole size will be 2" with a grommet. Is this something I can do or should I have the original fabricators do it? Any special precautions to take?

A hole saw will work fine, just go slower to avoid heating and don't force the bit, especially when bit exits the bottom. And try to have a vacuum running - it makes a mess.

You also want to ease the top and bottom edges to prevent a stress crack from starting. Pay attention to this as the hole saw breaks through.
