The only advice I can give you is to get at least 3 independent bids. And I would start by having a state forester tramp your woods and ask his/her advice.

Good luck.

The worse thing you can do is call a sawmill or wood buyer that works for a sawmill because they only have one persons interest in mind and that is not your. Call the DNR forester and he can give you a list of forest consultants tat have good reputations.

Forester by day.
Woodworker by night.

Contact your local office of the Virginia Department of Forestry (http://www.dof.virginia.gov/county/west/clinch/wis-index.htm). They can meet you on the property, and give you feedback about your plans. If you are sure you want to sell your timber now, a meeting may not be neccessary. They can give you a list of consulting foresters, who will work on your behalf, protect your interests, and most importantly, appraise your timber, and give you an honest estimate of the value of your timber. It's the consultants job to get you more money for your timber, while protecting your land and streams. As mentioned elsewhere in this post, a mill or timber buyer's only interest is to get the timber cheap. With that method, there are a number of loopholes in which the landowner comes up short, in some cases the landowner doesn't even know some of the ways they were cheated. Good luck.

Working with a good forester is always better than trying to make decisions on your own. That being said, the other post would have you think timber buyers for sawmills are all crooks. Very sad to have such narrow opinions. As we all know there will be good and bad in people. Picking any consulting forester will not ensure you are making the best decision. Vet any and everyone you deal with get references and review jobs done for other landowners.
