Traditionally, Hard Jointing stones (Coarser 80 to 240 grit) are used on 3,600 rpm machines. Soft jointer stones (Finer 280 to 600 grit) are used on 6,000 rpm machines.

Grit Size:
Finer grits (higher number) produce better finish quality.
Coarse grit stones will joint up faster and have a longer life.

Bonds:
Resin - better finish, will not hold a form as long.
Vetrified - cooler cuts, better for holding qualities than Resin.

Abrasive Materials:

Green Silicon Carbide: Cuts cooler and faster than Black Silicon Carbide.
Black Silicon Carbide: Smoother finish, longer life.
Aluminum Oxide: Pure White Cuts fast and cool, best for Straight Joints on Planers.

NOTE: Grinding accuracy is critical in determining proper jointing stone selection.
