Alden, If you are getting a glue pot bander, it is a pain to change colors, unless you have a quick change pot and multiple pots to use.
The solution is to use a neutral or clear adhesive. The common adhesives have fillers in them, the clears don't, so they go further per pound. Buy the best adhesive you can. It is cheaper to pay more. We use both Dorus and Jowat, different banders. The specific adhesive should be based on the line speed of your bander. Cheaper banders typically run slow so need an adhesive with longer open times. Make sure to check the accuracy of your temperature controller. Use an IR meter directly on the application roll. If the machine you are getting doesn't have automatic filling of the pot, try to keep the level fairly constant. You will have less cleaning issues. Maintain the glue system!!! Keep a service record and clean it on time. If you allow the return channels to bake until they turn to charcoal you will have a real PIA session to clean them. Be sure to set the application thickness correctly. Don't let the panel drag on the application roller. Get some clear banding from you supplier so you can see the glue line. (They usually have small rolls of it they will give customers for free.) PVC & ABS banding comes primed. If you are going to put wood or HPL on you will need to prime it first. Some people just dilute yellow or white glue to use as primer, We use the Dorus product.
Good luck, a bander is probably the most productive piece of equipment in the shop.
