Finishing the bottom of over fridge cabinet
7/22/18
The last kitchen I build had an over fridge cabinet that was set 72" off the floor. The refrigerator that was installed was only 69" tall leaving the not so attractive cabinet underside in view. I'm doing another kitchen job and want to dress up the cab bottom to match the exterior species. My thought is to shorten the cabinet sides by 3/8", leaving a 3/8" face frame overhang. I could then apply a finished 1/4" veneer skin to the bottom, glued and pin nailed to the bottom of the sides and butted up to the inside of the 3/8" face frame lip. Has anyone done it this way? Any other ideas on how to do this?

I use a filler.

Matt, that's a nice look. How do you attach the filler piece? Seems you'd want to allow it to be removed and replaced in the event the HO purchased a taller or shorter fridge.

Matt, one thought I had is that your custom solution is better suited to when you know how tall the refrigerator is. My current job is new construction and the filler would require a return trip at some future date.

What about the airflow for the fridge. Some specs on fridges require a larger space over the top of the fridge so it can breathe.
I just paint the bottom of the fridge cabinet.

I use L brackets to attach. Most fridge specs give you the info you need to cut out the filler. If they change appliances down the road, that’s a good time to have them call for a new filler, and maybe sell them some other things they didn’t know they needed. At the very least, you charge for your time to cut or make a new filler.
