Cutting laminate with protective film
12/2/14
Hello everyone,
We have a project that uses gloss laminate that comes with a protective film on it. I would like to cut it with the film on it and I am looking for feedback from anyone who has done this. Problems to look out for etc.
We use blind tenon joinery so the change in the tenon thickness is one of the concerns but we can deal with that with the software. FWIW we are using a Thermwood CS 45 router and Vortex cutters.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gerry

I do this all the time, no issues. Banding is hit or miss. Depends on how the film behaves when cutting.

Hi Dean,
That was one of my concerns but it didn't seem to be a problem with this job. The film is well adhered to the laminate and we spent a lot of time removing it prior to cabinet assembly.
Thanks,
Gerry

We leave it on all the way to shipping. If it is hard to get off it is most likely old.

Larry,
I am quite sure it was old stock. My supplier was not aware Nevamar even sold gloss white laminate. Also it was badly curled making hard to work with. It seems more now then ever before the task is to make silk purses out of sows ears ;)
We use blind tenon joinery on the tops bottoms and backs and I thought removing the film after assemble would be a near impossibility otherwise it would have liked to leave it on. We did edgeband with it on and just removed it before we assembled the cabinets.
Thanks,
Gerry
