Manual tool change SCM Tech 99
12/11/14
Hi all
I have a new to me SCM Tech 99
and it requires axis calibration, the problem is there is a tool still in the spindle and I don't want to calibrate with it still in there, so how do I take it out manually? whilst the machine is in HOLD
please assume in your answer that I have little to no knowledge in this subject!!
Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,
Not sure on your specific machine but the machines I have worked on have a green release button located on the spindle itself. Make sure you have a firm hold on the tool as it will push it out with some force! You will probably have to hold that button in for a few seconds before it releases.
Good luck!

I put a box of rags or foam under the spindle and keep my hands way far away from things unless I know EXACTLY what's going to happen.

There is nothing wrong with doing a axis cal with the tool in the spindle. The first that's going to happen is the Z axis is going to go up so that's it's clear of everything.

Thanks Guys for the reply's things got a little more complicated but I managed to remove the tool and collet whilst in the machine just leaving the holder behind
now I just have to work out how to use it !

We have a Komo and to eject the tool holder all you do is push a button near the head. If the machine has a stuck tool holder there are probably simple ways to get it lose, never had to. Best practice is to remove the tool holder at the end of every day and use a wiper to clean the socket. Tool holders and collets wear out over time so you may want to consider replacing them. Look @ the taper. Does it show signs of pitting, galling etc? Did you get a torque wrench with it? If not buy one with the proper adapter for your tool holder nut.

The scm norm for ejecting a tool (as long as the tool mag isn't in the way) is
Go to mdi, enter
M51 enter cycle start
M6 enter cycle start
Turn the main auto\manual Switch
Then depending on the machine the hand held control has a spindle release button (two arrows facing each other ><) or the cycle start button on the hand control, or as mentioned with a large (normally) green button on the spindle casing.
