Are PT chemicals toxic to living trees?3/24
I want to build treehouses. I own a tk1220. Blades and TABs are expensive. I wondered why I couldn't put wooden dowels into a tree instead of steel for smaller loads. So I drilled a 3" hole in one of my friend's hemlock trees that were on the "to be thinned" list, and drove a piece of Lowe's 4x4 fir turned to 3" into the hole just to see if the fir dowel would swell up and lock into the hole in the same way that the drier horizontal rung of a stool swells up and locks into the wetter leg which shrinks as their moisture contents reach equilibrium. (the dowel is tighter now than when installed 2weeks ago but not tested in any way). The fir is eventually going to rot where the embedded, saturated end meets air. So I'll try to limit the air exposure for the fir. But what if I used kiln dried pressure treated lumber for the dowel instead? Would the pt chemicals leach into the tree and harm it? What if the dowels were white oak or black Locust? Would anything bad leach from them? Thanks in advance
Yeah, why not non- rotting wood and ditch the chemicals.
Why not just use metal? Boring holes and building a structure in a tree are pretty damaging, and since the wood will be rendered useless for anything other than firewood, use bolts.
I emailed a pressure treatment company who offers cca treated products and asked my question. Their response came in the form of a phone call. I was impressed. The fellow said that what i wanted to do was off label and not recommended. However he did say that in his personal opinion, their product wouldn't hurt a living tree any more than a piece of untreated wood or steel.
Nelson sells TAB hardware if anyone is looking. It is expensive. But it looks high quality.
In the same way that a tree will close up over a broken branch, I would expect it to close up over a driven dowel as well. Keep it small though. You might try to dress the wound to prevent infection.
Here is an option:
