is this African Walnut?4/11
I have been told that this wood is African Walnut. To me it looks more like a African Mahogany? What do you guy's think?
I am saying "no" to African Mahogany, or Khaya. It looks similar to Mozambique, but can't be 100% sure.
I think your choice of Mozambique (Ovangkol) is much better than the African Walnut or Mahogany!
Names like "African Walnut" are almost meaningless. They are more commonly conjured up to give credibility to a lesser known species by attaching a name with perceived value to it.
One could sell Poplar as "Indiana Mahogany" and get away with it since there is no control other than the marketplace, and it is as ill-informed as ever.
This looks like Wisconsin walnut, also called Big Deal. It is very rare and so is extremely valuable. I do not believe I have a piece in my wood collection...that is how rare it is.
Actually, David is correct.
So you are agreeing with David that it is Indiana Mahogany?
oh wait....the other David said it was Mozambique! (to many David's in this post)
Gene, if you wish to buy some very rare Wisconsin walnut I am sure I can give you a good deal ;-) I have a good supply of it!
Thanks guy's for the help
Actually, I think it looks closer to Philippine mahogany stained a darker color.
