We have a old heavy 20" crescent bandsaw 1hp that blew a switch. We replaced the switch and it tries to start but then blows the breaker. We tried a different switch and that didnt help. It is single phase and it is on a double 30amp breaker.....Any ideas about what is wrong......thanks!

Might want to check the motor windings. I'd guess one is shorted to ground. Easy enough to have re-wound.

Bruce......thanks for the suggestion.....the motor is fairly new....few years old with not much use.....could the windings have gone bad that soon ?

It happens. Isolate the motor from whatever wiring is in the saw and try and run it directly. It could be the short is somewhere between the switch and the motor.

Being that it's single phase I'd check for a bad starting capacitor first, second it could be the centrifugal switch internally may be bad. Sometimes dust will get in the contacts and not make connection .

All good suggestions. Another thing to do is remove the blade so the motor is only spinning the drive wheel. If it starts under that condition than it is most likely the capacitor.
Also of course spin the motor first by hand to make sure it is not somehow frozen.
