Aerosol contact cement on prefinished ply?11/10
We need to stick a lot of 1/4" plywood skins to uv prefinished plywood.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Will it adhere and last or should we look at other options?
I tried the same method recently. Sanded the UV ply with 80grit before spraying 3M aerosol contact cement to both surfaces. The bond started to fail at edges before leaving the shop and I ended up having to brad nail around the perimeter.
I was going to use a construction adhesive like Liquid Nails and spread with a trowel next time.
After many tests we found that, as you said, most glues failed even with scuff sanding.
We ended up sanding off the finish completely and using standard wood glue and 23g headless pins to secure.
Next time we will just run UV 1 side for the ends needing skins!
I wonder how well melamine glue would work? I'd still scuff the UV.
The glue of choice for me as far as prefinished ply is RooClear.
Great! Thanks for the tips, fellas!
