Edge Gluing Thin Stock8/3
I need to edge glue 1/4" thick Koa that is 6" wide and 7' long into 36" wide pieces. I will then cold press on to face of flush doors. Any thoughts on the edge gluing of the 1/4" pieces would be appreciated. Tape seems to be a popular technique. Any others?
Rip the edges on a 45 then make a couple passes with the jointer fence on 45. You double your glueing surface by doing this but you also make it more difficult to flush up the boards... but it can be done
I have never tried to do what you are attempting, but maybe ship lap them (1/8" × 3/8" ) rabbets with clamping cauls would work.
I take it that this is creating 1/4" thick veneer? Do you think 1/4" is going to work as a veneer?
Larry has a good point. 1/8" is the maximum thickness I use for shop made veneers.
As far as edge gluing thin stock, taping works well if the material is flat and straight, but you have to take care to keep the joints flush. Another approach is to tape the pieces together without glue and lay them up with epoxy in a vacuum press. The epoxy will wick up through the joints and edge glue them. The edge joints as well as the veneer/ substrate faces should be sanded to 80# to insure adhesion.
I would glue them up like any other wide board panel. Square edges are fine because the glue joint will be stronger than the wood next to it.
I would cut 1 sheet of melamine 1/2" narrower than the rough panel width.
Place your bar/case clamps on a workbench as you normally would every 16" or so.
Wax 1 side of the melamine with car wax or paste wax. I don't like using plastic sheeting because its always a battle to keep it in the right place. Place the melamine on the clamps.
Layup your wood panel on top of the waxed melamine just like a thicker panel. Now place your top clamps. Before you start squeezing make a bunch of cauls out of 3" wide plywood or melamine and clamp them to the melamine with bar clamps across the glue joints. Clamp away. If necessary you can use door shims under the cauls to locally press down the individual boards if they move.
