Table base

I have a table base to make. The table top will be 8'x8' (huge). The base must be 4'x4' and be about 29" high. The base will look as if two pyramids were joined at the 18" mark, bottom looking like a pyramid, top piece inverted. It would be as if the base had a "waist". What do you think?

Base better be made out of steel plate and anchored to the floor.

Sounds like a pretty stable design to me and would allow you to get the waisted area fairly small. 4' square at the floor and 4' square at the under side of the table. Basically a large pedestal boxed-in to make the upright and inverted pyramid. The 2' overhang will help with keeping peoples feet off the base but probably not by much. The cavity in the base could easily be used to include some ballast if the construction was to be fairly light weight.

Given the a good amount of weight in the base and top it'd be tough to up-end the table with 6' of table on the base and a 2' overhang though Im sure it could be done if one end of the table were populated with a lot of weight and absolutely nothing on the opposing side.

This is a rough calculator Ive used in the past to give an idea on stability. https://www.gyrobases.com/gyro-table-stability-calculator/

Make sure it will fit INTO the room.

The design sounds ok to me. Maybe something clever to join the two pyramids. Also what are you going to do at the joints of the pyramid. I have made lots of pyramids but just used glue and tape, in this case you will need to use a clete screwed on the inside joint cut at the proper angle, i.e. it is not going to be 45 deg.

Check this out it might help you

This is useful for calculating angles

We don't have any idea how wide the points of the pyramids will be at the waist. Base size is okay, but that is an 8' square top and if the mating point of the pyramids is too narrow, that's the trouble point. I'd never build an 8' square table on a single post in the center. As mentioned, 8' won't go through normal doorways.

At the waist the horizontal distance will 24"

I'm asking about the cross section at the waist. The OP described the base as a pyramid, and an inverted pyramid on top of that. Technically, that describes the waist as a point, right? Maybe I'm not understanding the verbal description.

Depends on the height of the pyramids. If they are equal and both the full 29" that would put the waist at 24" wide, but Mike mentioned a joint at 18" so I envision something with unequal pyramids like this?

My bad, I missed the 18" height. Based off of et's drawing it looks like 18" on the horizontal"

BTW et what software did you draw that in?

That was my thought of the scenario. If you built that base out of poorly joined ply each leg would act like a massive gusset. You could park a Sherman tank on that table if the base.was heavy.

Negativity abounds in this world.

Put a central 4" square post in that table, add eight gussets (legs of the. Pyramids) and you've got a table that could hold up the world.

But we need steel bolted to the floor.

Pat , that was just a quick sketch in inventor

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
