I am doing a rail and stile construction of an arched entry door in white oak. I intend to clad a 7/8" rail and stile core with 7/16" vertical v-groove ship lap on both sides to arrive at a 1 3/4" door. The question is, what is the best way to attach the ship lap to the core?
Certainly not with glue. How do you expect to keep it from getting stuck in the jam during the wet season? Or showing gaps in the winter. Maybe you don't have seasonal extremes where you work.
a little tongue in cheek sarcasm is fair.
I use West System epoxy. We glue solid wood on our edges and the top and bottom of the core material so the core is completely sealed in wood. This is a two step process. Then, glue the face material.
A vacuum bag is handy, since you can glue all the planks on one side none step, then do the other.
If no bag, then cold clamp work well and reasonably fast. Even though I have a vac bag, I often will just clamp on the bench, as in the photos.
Plank style doors on a ladder core get glued where wood meets wood, but never in the T&G. The v-joint type of T&G actually has a 'crush zone' of wood that can crush a bit rather than buckle as it expands.
When gluing the planks in place on the ladder frame, we use 0.020" spacers to hold them in position so that can expand a bit. I think most wood stays the same EMC when it leaves our shop, or it will gain some moisture in service.
That is pretty thick. There is always discussion of too thick veneers glued to a core with the consensus that it is not advisable.
