bander options

I'm looking into a new bander purchase. I anticipate doing 95% or more of 1mm and thin tape. Maybe some 2mm. I don't anticipate doing much 3mm, if any. So, I'm trying to figure out what bander configuration would work best. I'm set on getting the pre-mill option. But I can't quite figure out which combination of profile scrape, finish scrape, and buffing makes sense.

Buy the best one you can buy, you can bet when time comes and 3 mil presents itself you will want to do it. if you do go full size make sure corner rounding is in

Money is always a consideration. A corner round unit adds about $10k. If I'm not doing much 3mm, that $10k could go toward another machine that IS making me money.
My question is about the profile scrape, glue scrape, and buffer units. For the thin tape and 1mm tape that accounts for 99% of my work, which of those units do I need most, and in what priority? Because in the class of banders I'm looking at, there aren't the spaces for all 3.
I've read posts that say the buffing unit does next to nothing for thin tape. I'm also not sure whether the profile scrape or the glue scrape unit is better for the thin tape and 1mm.

I started with a virutex Hot air in the mid 90s, bought a brand new Brandt kd 54 in 2000 i have a second one for back up, finally bought a new one,, not sure what you build but the edgebander next to the cnc is the most profitable machine in the shop. just went much larger and should have done that years ago.. it was the amount of hand work that had to be done on the thicker banding that made me move up,, I do know money is an option, a better job with thicker banding will pay off 10 k likety split.

I would go for glue scrape for sure, and probably buffing. Profile scraping wont do much for you if you running only thin tapes, thats my two cents

We have had a Cehisa ep-9 for 12 years now, with plc control. We changed the radius knives to 2mm because we rarely use the 3mm. It does not have premill but does havevscraowr and buffer. We have been very happy with it and in the past two years have had to change some of the hoses and pneumatic controls which are generic and not expensive, the buffer does not do much on thin tape, but does give a better finish on 1mm. We have been running a lot of 1mm textured tape that matches the textured melamine. Dream of hot air or laser machine for edge free look, but the cost is out of my league. Paid in mid 30k range for my Bander. Harold.

Let's say your picking out a new bander and all you do is 1mm. And you only had 1 unit to choose from (profile scrape, glue scrape, or buffer), which would it be?
Same question, but you had 2 units to choose from, which would they be?
thanks

If the thickest tape is 1mm, then there is no profile. Just buffer will give you a polished edge. I have not bought a Bander in 12 years, so don't know if these stations come totally separate or in pkgs like a car, but all you will need will be a scraper and buffer or only buffer, brand of machine might relate more to where your shop is for servicing or if you are buying other equipment at same time. When I opened my shop in Florida, I was moving from Montreal; I stopped at Adwood on the drive down and bought a Casilin slider, Detel double line borer and pocket hole machine and a Cehisa Bander that were coming to me after a show with a great discount and feee delivery and install. My local mechanic has been great at finding me generic parts for the Bander over the years. Saved me a fortune in parts. Automation direct has cylinders at 30.00 that can cost 300.00 from Adwood.

I run a lot of thin PVC and the buffer is indispensable. I have never felt the need for scraping, pre-mill, etc.

1Glue scrape
2Buffer
3profile scrape
In order or combo in order. the profile scrape is only needed if you are doing 3mm IMO.
I just bought new Brandt with pre-mill Glue & Profile, no buffers. I miss my buffers for the best finished look, but without a glue scrape they are real easy to gum up with glue making them worse than useless, especially if you have employees. Problaby not the worst thing for me to not have on this machine.
Not unhappy with my purchase, just used to the perfect finished product with the buffers. Now it is a great edge, but a bit 'sharp'. Realize I am being VERY picky here. I am VERY picky about my edgeband out of my machine and believe there should be ZERO hand work afterwards!!!
Another note about buffers, they are the only thing to put the right color back into the banding edge (especially noticeable on darker colors with thicker pvc banding) and get rid of the 'haze' left by cutters and scrapers. If you work with medium to dark bandings, even 2mm IMO I'd make sure I have buffers over profile scrape if possible for the best finished look
