Concealed bi-fold hinges

We need to build a re-tractable bifold door. We've been directed to use HAWA Concepta hardware from Hafele company.

We have the concepta part in our building but now need a way hinge the bi-fold door.

Does anybody know of any kind of hinge other than a piano hinge to make this happen? Would like some ability to adjust the second door later if needed. Not a big fan of Soss hinges either.

Any suggestion for something that might also have adjustment?

Stay in the Hafele family. Hinge is called Aximat Hafele part # is 343.91.600

Doug has provide the perfect bi-fold door hinge solution but the Concepta from Hafele is also available as a bi- folding Concepta.

This link to a hinge that is made specifically for the application that you have. The hinge will be on the "inside" of the door. Available from local distributors stock nationwide or call the manufacturer for a distributor location.

The above hinge from Selby has been a really good seller for us. The one trick with these hinges depends on how much space you have available in your pocket. The hinge will leave a gap of 9/16" between the doors.

I typically will use a mortise hinge in between the doors to allow adjustment vertically and horizontally. If door opposite of Hawa doesn't need to ride on upper running guide I would look into Accuride retractable hardware. It is significantly cheaper and provides same function.

I just saw this. I have no idea who the manufacturer is, but I would find out before paying $21.00 per hinge! :0

Mark Vierno...

That is the Hettitch i was talking about...Heres the thing...only amatures and hobbiests shop at Rockler for hardware. Never buy hardware at Rockler! I get those from my lumber supplier for about $1.50 per hinge.

Mark, I interpret those hinges from Rockler as being $44 a pair.

That actually seems kind of cheap when you consider the flipper door hardware part from Hafele was over $1700 per door !!!

The Bi-folding Concepta is rather expensive but the regular Concept 25 is not so bad considering what it does and how well it does it. The Aximat bi-folding door hinge from Hafele is hands down the best solution for controlling bi-fold doors. Discussing these other hinges is mostly a waste of time. If you have a cabinet door which is 1" thick or less and under 60" high and 24" wide, absolutely go to a much less expensive Accuride Flipper Door hardware. If you have a large door and you don't want it to sag or malfunction ever, than spend the money and get the Concepta from Hafele.

Flipper doors in general are something that should banished from the face of the planet. In theory they do actually perform as advertised but in practice they don't perform at all. Ninety five percent of their life they are in retracted position because they are a pain in the ass to drive.

Flipper doors take training. You have to teach your client to only pivot the door when the hardware extension is a it's apex. If you start to close the door sooner than that then most will break at that joint, even the HAWA. While you can train your client you can't train the client's friends or the new cleaning service or anybody else that want's to be helpful.

Better instead to counsel your customer. Let them know that their friends have TV sets also (they just don't talk about it).

Optimize cabinet design for the best function and appearance during the 95% part of the day, not the day you need to impress someone who shouldn't be in your inner sanctum anyway. Send your customers a link to a decent screen saver that will turn the TV set into performance art instead.

Door shop guy,

Here’s the thing…I never said buy it from Rockler, but find out the manufacturer [then source it wholesale]. The exclamation mark and the mouth open emoticon were there to show my shock at the price.

So now that you have confirmed that it is a Hettitch hinge, could you please give us a model number? I spent 10 minutes on their website and couldn’t find it. Also, I would love to know where you are getting them for a $1.50 per hinge. My experience with Grass, Blum and Salice is that these specialized hinges are generally somewhere around $5-8 apiece in small quanities.

Cabmaker,

Their $42.00 per pair on their retail site, but when I purchase hinges wholesale, they're sold by the piece so Rocklers price would be the $21.00 that I mentioned. I tried to make it easy for everyone to price compare, but I guess I just made it confusing.

I do apologize i do not keep myself up to date with all the icons and such...didnt even notice it. For the most part i live in a cave.

My Hettitch book is from 2006 and to be honest here it has been at least 3 years since i bought these hinges from Liberty Hardwoods but i did buy enough of them to last me a while. Plus i dont sell as much hardware as i used to. The part # in the book is 1 030 883. Hope this helps...Another late night in the shop for me.

I find that i use a little bit of Blum,Salice,Grass,Hettitch,Hafele depending on the specialty of the hinge.

I hope Hettitch is still in business and is doing good...I love their products!

door shop guy,

Excellent! I've attached the link for those that might be interested. I occasionally have an application where these might come in handy. Now I need to find a local distributor.

Thank You,
Mark

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
