Spindle molder as pre mill

6/5/15

We are doing some work for a builder who is particularly fussy about the scribe line and glue line on laminate doors with 1mm edge tape on them.

We cut on an old altendorf f45 and it's not easy to get a perfect, minimal scribe line. Unfortunately the budget wasn't big enough on the edgebander for a pre mill.

I have been thinking about getting a spindle moulder to run the doors through and take 1mm off to get a perfect edge top and bottom.

Thinking it would also be handy to rout finger pulls into painted doors aswell.

Haven't got a huge amount of experience with spindle moulders and wondering if this is a terrible idea?

Assuming it would take about 1 minute per door to run all four sides.
Is it pretty foolproof or should I expect operator problems maybe like the end of the door getting an extra chunk taken out or chipping of the melamine surface with a blunt blade?
The stock would be 16mm MDF with gloss melamine coating.

Anything to look out for in spindle moulders, not looking to spend a large amount on it.

While I'm on the subject, looking to purchase a newer saw with digital fence to help with this problem. Can I expect to get a really good cut with minimal, consistent scribe line from an Altendorf or Griggio 10-15 years old, digital fence well maintained?

Thanks

Yes, this will work. We are doing it right now in fact. I got tired of messing around with a scoring blade setup on a PM66 for ripping melamine for a certain project.

Now we are just using a regular saw blade and taking 1mm off each edge.

We are using a powerfeed on a nice shaper, but I don't see why you couldn't get similar results by hand. Also, I would recommend a spiral insert cutterhead. Amana has an aluminum head that is reasonably priced.

Will work, but adds a lot of time & you don't want to have to change it to do something else. Setup will be critical. Get a feed. Use a cutter head that shears down from top and up from bottom. Get a good, heavy shaper with a very stiff fence setup. Any give at all will cause problems.

Why not spent the time to fix your saw issue. Your Altendorf is plenty capable if set up correctly. Or, you could route four edges with a CNC, seems inefficient to me but... A beam saw would also do a good job. You can get a pre-milling station in an edgebander, that would require a new purchase.

Thanks for the response

All valid points.
Fixing the core of the problem is a good point. I think the saw itself is getting a bit old to hold it's squareness, It's all good when an experienced cutter is on it but if one of the less experienced, dare I say "rougher" employees cuts, the scribe lines become unacceptable. I need a foolproof option (digital rip fence) and yes one day CNC.

I will do beam saw in a heartbeat they are pretty cheap where I am but haven't got the room for one.

Thanks again for response.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
