Base cabinet shelves question

2/4/16
Mike Fuson

For years I've used a half shelf mounted solid in base cabinets where applicable. I'm wanting to start line boring the sides and do an adjustable shelf. I can't do the half shelf because I can't line bore in the middle of the side for the front pins because I've only got a single row line boring machine and the fense is set up for two inches away from the bits. I can however do it and use a full shelf. I was wondering how you guys do it. I want something that is handy for the customer, and I've never thought a half shelf was. Any thoughts? Thanks

I never used anything but a full adjustable shelf in my lowers with the exception of the corner cabinet the part that is Lost on the return I cut that shelf out the width of the door opening and half the depth and of course it is fix I Use that shelf only when I can't sell them on a half Moon I do my best to avoid a Lazy Susan

Agree with John
always depth of cabinet -10mm
Same thing in the corners to avoid cutting a corner shelf but you need to hand drill the return end of the shelf.

No disrespect intended Mike, but seriously, a fixed half shelf in base cabinets? I wonder what market you serve. That is so 80s. I am guessing face frame construction then too. You can pick up double line boring machines for a song these days.

Full depth adjustable shelf when I use shelves.

I try to talk most of my clients out of shelves lately and most of the time they prefer some type of insert in their place whether it be a trash can, rollouts, pot/pan storage, ect.

Also a good way to do a few add ons.

Thanks for the responses. Let me clarify that most of the kitchens I do get pullout shelves, which is the best. But some jobs are on a tight budget which means just a basic shelf. So to answer your question Rich, most of my work is high end. I don't turn down the low budget jobs either though. I don't think that means I'm stuck in the 80's, maybe the 70's because I still wear plaid bell bottoms:) kidding...

Whew. Well aren't those bell bottoms coming back yet? I remember well....

Don't even joke like that ,Rich. I still have bad dreams of me wearing bellbottoms.

These days I do my very best to get clients to go all drawers in base cabinet in place of shelves and especially roll-outs.

While we put adjustable shelves in our cabs, the reality is, if you are designing the kitchen for the customer, they rarely ever "adjust" the shelves after they determine what's going in there...

Think about it... when was the last time you adjusted your shelves?...

Very true KAP. As much as anything I'm thinking I can bore the sides faster than I can mount a shelf. Personally I don't want to bend over and get anything out of a base cabinet. In my opinion the pull out shelves are the best option which is what I push for. We do them in a lot of pantries.

OMG why do people still scoff at face frame cabinets...many people still want them....I personally like the look but do I disrespect frameless guys.... no ...geesch ...enough

Faceframes rule in the middle of the country. So do farms and cows....can't be all that bad!

I don't understand roll outs. They are basically a drawer that forces you to open a door or most likely two doors first. The doors usually look beat up inside after a short time. They also consume a lot of space due to the space outs required for the doors & face frame. Why not just make drawers? Haven't made a face frame in 25 years.

I agree 100% with Larry. That's why I always do my best to steer customers toward drawers.

I did this in my own kitchen we are very happy with all drawers in the base cabinets.

I like drawers as well but I wouldn't want all drawers, it would just look odd to me.
Richard that pic is not sideways on my device???

Drawers all the way, except pantries. We use zero clearance Blum 165 degree hinges that do not require any spacers. Drawer slides mount in system holes with euroscrews. Harold.

Beautiful white kitchen. Really don't like 165 hinges, they start sagging way sooner than the regular 120's.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
