Help Setting Up Cabinet Shop

We are decently capitalized and looking to setup production in Las Vegas-

Want to produce RTA Face Frame cabinets, with no particle board- similiar to the import cabinets found on kitcabinets.com or cabinets to go.

We want to concentrate on easy shaker style cabinets and be able to produce 2 kitchens per day with minimal staffing.

We want to minimize the need for highly skilled labor and utilize as much machinery as possible to automate the processes.

Looking for suggestions on machinery setup to accomplish this and spend less then 500k.

Depends on your expectations and market area. 500K? You will need every bit of that depending on your competition and desire to have some head room in said machinery for expansion. We have 1.4 million in 2 CNC routers 2 beam saws and 2 edgebanders and it is not enough. That does not account for the rest of the equipment to make it all work.

If you invested the money you could get a 5% to 10% return on that money. Your proposal is HIGH risk to get maybe a 10% return after a lot of hard work.

From an entrepreneurial perspective, why do you think the market wants a cabinet shop in Las Vegas?

Most would prefer to buy American if the price is close to the same and quality is there. We believe we can achieve this. As to Las Vegas, here is the logical choice for me since I have some distribution here and in Phoenix, and have an existing management structure to assist.

We want to focus on RTA cabinets and not get into the custom market.

Another driving factor is our desire to create decent jobs here and take back some factory jobs from China. We are not after crazy margins, just enough for something to be left over after paying all expenses.

Have you seen anyone else do this in Las Vegas?

Its just custom shops and commercial cabinet shops. There are only a handful of US based RTA cabinet shops. Solid is one, Conestoga is another.

Decore is another. I toured their shop decades ago the machinery they had was in the 10s of millions. It must be much more now. They have delivered very predictably for decades. Including Las Vegas.

The fact that no one is doing it in Las Vegas would give me pause.

It doesn't sound like you have done enough research.

Decore started in the mid 60s, and grew with the southern Calif baby boom.

I appreciate what your saying, but my situation is quite different as my real estate development company provides enough purchasing power to guarantee a level of sales to tread water.

The real question is what equipment recommendations you would have with my goals in mind.

The usual, router, edgebander, edge drill, software. Since you want to do RTA, you may want to look at Tenon Cam or the dowel setup that some posted about on this forum. Also for big volume you may want to look at Keytrix, and Cadcode.

Please tell me more about developing and how you got the into that?

Not sure why you want to do face frames. more labor and equipment than euro box and the customer is mostly concerned with face appearance. I'm predigest because my shop is commercial only and therefore frameless only. You will spend more labor making only the face frame than I do making a complete cabinet. At any rate there are many equipment manufacturers that can give you recommendations to chose from. Material handling is where much labor can be wasted, especially on a face frame line. Make to order, do not build to inventory. Hardwood parts are especially prone to degrade siting on a shelf. LV will require a humidity controlled shop/warehouse.
Your $500K budget is pretty limited. An optimizing rip saw, middle of the road molder and an optimizing cross cut saw will probably consume 40-60% of it. A handful of software $40K at the low end. Compressed air system $25K+. Dust collection with fire suppression $80K+. Panel saw on the cheap $80K. Widebelt $60K. Will you be using an edgebander? $70K. CNC router? Line bore, construction system?, office set up, work stations, small tools, tooling, electrical system, I've zoomed past your $500 already, and we haven't bought any inventory. None of my SWAG's have assumed top of the line equipment.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
